Fridge Words May Very Well Be The 'Coolest' Word Game On iOS

January 14, 2013
To be sure, Fridge Words is not the first game of its specific kind on iOS. But I must say that it's the first to really catch my eye. Like such games as Fridge Frenzy and Magnet-O, Fridge Words is a word game inspired by the popular refrigerator word magnets you may or may not have played with. But its execution as such a game is, in my view, the best among its lot. Fridge Words is best played in turn-based multiplayer mode à la Letterpress. But it can also be enjoyed in single-player mode. Either way, the rules of the game are pretty much the same. In every session of Fridge Words, you are given a set of letter magnets. From this set, you have to form as many high-scoring words as you can within a minute and a half. How, you ask? By dragging the letter magnets onto the game's virtual fridge, of course. If you can't see the video embedded above, please click here. Formed words are scored depending on their component letters. Unsurprisingly, vowels have the lowest point allocation, while the most uncommonly used consonants have the highest. However, there are also silver and gold letters that serve as point multipliers. Furthermore, there are a couple of power-ups you can take advantage of. There's the time boost, which adds 30 seconds to your time, and there's the blank magnet, which is something of a wildcard. But the one thing I like most about Fridge Words is that you can tap certain letters to flip them into new letters. That is, you can flip an m into a w, a p into a d, an n into a u, and a b into a q. Word. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch running iOS 4.3 or later, Fridge Words is available now in the App Store for free. [gallery link="file" order="DESC"]
