The new thin and light paradigm may be dominated by Intel's ultrabooks, but don't forget about AMD. Hewlett-Packard has unveiled two new AMD-powered Pavilion Sleekbooks, offering budget-friendly alternatives to pricier systems, and they are available with or without touch. The two new Pavilion Sleekbooks are 15-inch laptops with the same slim build and light weight seen across the ultrabook category, and offer a full feature set while still being affordable.

The HP Pavilion TouchSmart Sleekbook features AMD's answer to Intel's Core processors—an AMD A8 APU (Advanced Processing Unit) that offers general and graphics processing on the same chip die. Paired with 6GB of memory (configurable up to 8GB) and a up to 1TB of hard drive storage, the Pavilion TouchSmart Sleekbook also features a 15.6-inch, 10-finger capacitive touch display. With the touch screen, the Pavilion TouchSmart Sleekbook measures 0.9-inch thick. Ports include USB 3.0, USB 2.0, HDMI output, Ethernet, and 802.11n Wi-Fi. A full-size keyboard offers a 10-key numeric pad for easy data entry, and the accompanying touchpad includes advanced gesture support, including commands specific to Windows 8.

HP is also offering a more traditional laptop—without touch capability—in the HP Pavilion Sleekbook. Like the Pavilion TouchSmart Sleekbook, the standard Sleekbook features an AMD processor, with the base configuration including an AMD A6 APU, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive. Without touch capability, the Pavilion Sleekbook is a bit thinner, measuring only 0.82 inch thick. It, too, is equipped with USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports, HDMI output, wired Ethernet, and 802.11n Wi-Fi. The full-size keyboard includes a 10-key numeric pad, and the accompanying touchpad features all of the gesture support and Windows 8-specific commands mentioned above.

Both HP Pavilion Sleekbook models are available in several colors: Sparkling Black, Red, and Winter Blue. The HP Pavilion TouchSmart will sell in February, starting at $699 for basic configurations. The new HP Pavilion Sleekbook—without touch capability—will be available this month, starting for as little as $499.

About Brian Westover

Lead Analyst, Hardware

If you’re after laptop buying advice, I’m your man. I’ve been reviewing PCs and technology products for more than a decade. I cut my teeth in PC Labs, spending several years with PCMag.com before writing for other outlets, among them LaptopMag.com and Tom’s Guide. While computers are my main focus, I am also the resident Starlink expert, and an AI enthusiast. I’ve also written at length about topics ranging from fitness gear and appliances to TV and home theater equipment. If I’ve used it, I have opinions about it, whether somebody’s paying me to write them up or not.
