LAS VEGAS–Dish Network today unveiled an iPad app that will provide access to and control of its Hopper DVR box.

The Dish Explorer app for iPad is intended to be a second screen for the Hopper, which Dish unveiled at CES 2012. Those with the app will be able to use their iPad as a remote - changing channels and managing their DVR recordings.

"Customers are already using tablets while watching TV but, until Explorer, it had been two separate experiences," Vivek Khemka, vice president of Product Management at Dish, said in a statement. "What we've done is develop an integrated, seamless experience between the tablet and the television; only the Hopper creates an entirely new viewing dynamic."

The Explorer app will also provide details on popular and trending shows across Dish Network, with the opportunity to chat about them via Facebook and Twitter. The app will also recommend shows based on social media chatter and what people are watching.

That includes sporting events - view real-time sports stats from sports discovery service Thuuz, and get a heads up on games that are creating buzz in the Twitterverse and beyond.

"The Thuuz ratings on Explorer means sports fans can quickly see the potential no-hitters, the shut-outs and the upsets forming live before the sports recap on the evening news," said Khemka. "Seeing the big events live is always better and Explorer helps deliver that experience."

The free app will hit the Apple App Store on Jan. 7.
