Facebook is No. 1 social network in 127 countries, study finds

Facebook is already the world’s most popular social network. And new research from social media analyst Vincenzo Cosenza suggests it’s only getting more popular.

Every six months Cosenza puts out a World Map of Social Networks. The map is a deep sea of Facebook blue.

Facebook is the ruling social network in 127 of the 137 countries that Cosenza analyzes. Facebook, in its relentless march to global domination, added Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia and Vietnam since June, according to date that Cosenza crunched.

The major holdouts are Russia and the former Soviet Union, China and Iran, each of which has its own social network. V Kontakte and Odnoklassniki are tops in Russia. QZone dominates China. And Cloob is the go-to social network in Iran.

It’s interesting to note that these four social networking competitors are the only major ones left on Cosenza’s map of global dominance.

Cosenza said Asia is a big driver of Facebook’s growth. With 278 million users, Asia surpassed Europe and its 251 million users as the largest continent for Facebook. It has 243 million users in North America, 142 million in South America, 52 million in Africa and 15 million in Oceania.
