Google’s new datacenters to improve performance 30%

The opening of new datacenters focused on serving Asia will improve the Google experience for hundreds of millions of users

According to a report in the Times of India, Google is expecting the opening of their new Asian datacenters to improve performance of Google services in India as much as 30%. With more than 100,000,000 current users in India, Google hopes that the significant performance improvements will bring more users to Google services.

Despite the huge number of Indian users, and their potential as a source of revenue for Google business services, Google elected not to build a datacenter in India at this time. Lalitesh Katragadda, country head, India Products at Google, told the Times that the reason that Google was not building in India was the climate, with the hot weather making the country a less than ideal location.

He also pointed out that due to the country’s slow Internet connectivity features such a YouTube and Google+ Hangouts were not easily accessible.  Despite this, ComScore reports that the average user in India spends 2.5 hours a day on Google properties, with 95% of the countries web searches being run on Google. YouTube itself has over 35 million users in country, is the most heavily used Google service, on the basis of time spent by the user, , and provides almost 50% of all online video viewed in India.

With Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan serving up data to Indian customers, the overall Google experience throughout Asia will also be improved. The Singapore datacenter is expected to be online soon, with the datacenter in Taiwan coming online before the end of 2013.
