The iPad is a great device for getting many things done. It can help people create things as simple as a word document to pieces of art. Foldify is one such app that is able to create little works of art in the form of folded paper figures. The app allows users to create and design their own figures from a set of standard templates. The app works very well and it’s fun to be able to turn an image on an iPad screen into an actual tangible object that can be shown off to friends, family and coworkers.

I was intrigued by this app when I first heard about it a month or so ago. I anxiously waited it’s arrival to the App Store and I’ve been hooked on it ever since. I don’t claim to be a creative type but Foldify makes it easy for anyone to create simple paper figures. The app doesn’t need many instructions since the layout and functionality is very intuitive. There is a wide variety of colors to choose from that can be used with both the pencil and brush tools. There are also quite a few stamps available such as eyes, noses and mustaches that can add life to any character. There are more stamp packages like clothes that can be bought through in-app purchases for $0.99 per package. These stamps really make it easy, especially for kids, to create fun and unique characters.

I found that it takes a little time to get adjusted to the layout of the flattened out shapes and how to draw on them. The app helps to overcome this by displaying a 3D version of the object on the left-hand side that updates in real time as users color on the flattened out object on the right. That way users can always see which side of the object they are working on.

Foldify currently comes with ten different object templates that range from a simple box all the way to a bus and car. There is a lot that can be created from these ten templates but I’m hopeful more will come online in future updates. Once an objected is fully painted, the app gives users the ability to print it out directly via AirPrint or to send it via email as a PDF. Both options work well and it’s nice to be able to save objects as PDFs for easy sharing with others.

I’ve been really impressed with Folidfy so far. It’s been fun to take the time to paint an object and watch it come to life as a tangible creation as it is printed and assembled. My compliments go out to the developers who have found a creative way to really make use of the iPad as an artistic tool to gives users of all ages the chance to create something unique.
