They say true love knows no boundaries. And true love, for both each other and the iPhone 5, has earned the husband and wife team of Wong Tee Wee and Chin Yen Yee the distinction of being the very first owners of the Apple iPhone 5 in Malaysia, courtesy of telco Maxis.

At the epic launch at CapSquare PIKOM ICT Mall in Kuala Lumpur at midnight, 14 December, the happy couple were first of the batch of 45 early birds to grab the latest and greatest iPhone from Apple. Wong and Chin have been owners of previous generation iPhones – from the iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4.

They each purchased the iPhone 5 with Maxis’ iValue 1 plan which costs only RM100 per month, and comes bundled with 333 mins of local calls to all networks, 2GB of data, 4GB of Maxis Wi-Fi, 200 SMS, 20 MMS, 1000 SMS (Maxis to Maxis) and 800 mins (Maxis to Maxis) call time. The bundled plan also includes Maxis Loker – a free 10GB cloud storage facility and free 2 months of Free One Music subscription.

The live-wire couple queued from 10.00am on 13 December. A back-breaking 12-hour wait before the doors finally opened to collect their devices.

Maxis iPhone 5 payment counters
65 counters allocated for fulfilment of orders. Wow.

Maxis allocated 65 counters for pre-order fulfillment. Fulfillment services continued to wee hours of 14 December morning. From reports on ground (thanks Don Ang), 32GB and 64GB stocks were depleted around 3.00am but were quickly replenished (possibly using next day’s quota) to fulfill demand.

Queues were ungodly, and from the looks of it, subtantially more than last year’s big iPhone 4S launch at the KL Convention Center.

While Maxis refused to reveal numbers, the telco disclosed that pre-booking numbers were overwhelming and exceeded numbers from previous iPhone launches.

Kudos to LiewCF.com for info on the couple.
