Motorblast Review

Racing games feel very natural on a mobile platform. I have a hope that some day in the future Nintendo will see that and Mario Kart will find it’s way to iOS. This may be a fool’s hope, but until that time, we’re left to depend on other developers for our kart racing needs. Motorblast is one kart racing game that has hit the scene attempting to fill the void.

The gameplay in Motorblast gives players a racing experience that is expected from other games of its kind. The object is to man vehicles and race against others while attempting to take them out with weapons that are picked up during the race. Instead of the whimsical weapons like banana peels used in Mario Kart, the weapons in Motorblast arm racers with missiles and land mines. Each race only allows for certain types of weapons or items to be used. For example, one race may only allow for missiles to be used and the next may only allow for boosts. I like this aspect about the game as it adds a little more variety to the typical gameplay. The game consists of more than 60 races in campaign mode that span over several different tracks. As races are won, stars are awarded that are used to unlock more races and vehicles. The game also gives the option to purchase more stars to unlock everything quicker. Patient players shouldn’t need to spend the additional cash as long as they have the skills to keep winning races and stars.

As anyone would expect, the game comes with both tilt and touch control options to give players a chance to race how they feel comfortable. Both control types work well and seem to be accurate. One thing that is missing is a dedicated gas button. There is a brake button but the vehicles auto accelerate. I personally like to control my own speed and drift around corners so I wish the controls in the game allowed for this. The absent gas button is not a deal breaker, but it may not be ideal for players with my same preferences.

Motorblast has some nice looking graphics that take players through wild jungle tracks. They graphics look good on all devices but they have been especially optimized for any Retina Display devices. I think this is definitely a decent racing game that will appeal to many and it has just the right amount of racing action at an affordable price.
