My grandfather was in the Air Force during World War II and as a result I’ve always been interested in planes. It’s amazing that such heavy machines have found a way to become weightless and fly. Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders gives players the opportunity to jump in the cockpit of classic WWII airplanes and battle it out with the enemy over real-world locations. The physics and detailed gameplay are as close as anyone will get to real dogfights from the comfort of their couch.

There aren’t many good flight simulator games in the App Store but I’m happy to report that this game is the best that I’ve seen so far. There is a lot to be seen and experienced with several different game modes and realistic graphics. The game starts out with a very detailed tutorial instructing players how to fly their planes and do battle in the skies. Once the tutorial is complete, players have the chance to choose between a variety of single player and multiplayer game modes. I really like that there are so many varieties and that the game allows for friendly fights with friends online and over local WiFi networks. Needless to say, there is a lot of content to be completed in this game that will keep players busy for hours.

Any good flight simulator game needs a set of controls that are accurate and easy to manage. Sky Gamblers has a variety of control layouts that lets players customize their experience. The controls are fairly simple to learn but they will take a decent amount of time to master. The developers were kind enough to include controls for every player’s preferred style with both on-screen and tilt-based layouts. While I don’t prefer tilt controls, the tilt functionality in the game isn’t overly sensitive and definitely gets the job done. Just be careful not to get motion sickness from all the rotating flight patterns.

In my opinion, Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders is definitely worthy of the title of a real flight simulator for iOS. It has been well adapted for the mobile platform and the whole gaming experience feels very natural. The $4.99 price tag is higher than the average game out there but I feel that this is a premium game that deserves a premium price and delivers on what it promises.
