Microsoft Reportedly To Launch New Xbox Before Xmas 2013

This article is more than 10 years old.

Microsoft will release a new version of the Xbox game console in time for the 2013 holiday season, Bloomberg reports, citing "people familiar with the company's plans."

The new console would arrive a year after Nintendo's newly released Wii U, which hit stores November 18 in the U.S. As the story notes, Sony is also planning to offer a new version of its PlayStation game console.

No word yet on what the new console will be called, or how it will be priced.

One interesting question about the new Xbox is how it will be positioned - as game console or video entertainment set-top box. In recent months, the company has shifted its messaging around the Xbox, talking it up more and more as an alternative to traditional cable set-tops, offering a wide range of video, music and content options. The company also has been doing experiments with the cable companies, offering a limited set of content from from Comcast and Verizon's FiOS service to customers who already are subscribers.
