500px Brings Beautiful Photography To Your iPhone With New iOS App

By

It's about time.
It's about time.

500px launched an awesome iPad app last year, which allowed us to browse the site’s stunning photography from the comfort of our armchairs. We’ve been itching to have the same experience on our iPhones ever since, and today it’s here — a new 500px app for iPhone and iPod touch.

Like the iPad app, 500px for iPhone sports a clean black and white user interface that lets you enjoy photographs without any distractions. However, it has its own method of navigation.

Tap on the ‘500’ button at the top of the page and you’ll get access to notifications and settings; the photo button provides access to — as you may have guessed — photos and your profile; and finally the third button lets you switch between the popular, editors’ choice, upcoming, and fresh sections.

TechCrunch reports that 500px did explore the possibility of porting the iPad’s navigation style to the iPhone, but it didn’t really work out. Company CEO Oleg Gustel said: “The interactions were familiar to the user, but we were not pleased with how it turned out.”

And so the iPhone’s own navigation style was born, and it works well. The iPhone app isn’t perfect, however. While you can use it to explore photos, you can’t actually upload any of your own with it just yet. 500px says, however, that this is a feature that will arrive in a future update.

Gustel doesn’t see this as too much of an issue at this point. He says only 5%-10% of the site’s users actually upload pictures; the rest just come to check out the awesome photography on display. Some even use it as a way to pick up tips in an effort to take better photos of their own.

500px for iPhone is free, and it’s available to download from the App Store now. You can find it using the source link below.
