You may have forgotten, but Microsoft actually owns a search engine. It’s called Bing. Today Microsoft released the top Bing searches from 2012, and the results include events like the birth of Beyonce’s baby alongside celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Justin Bieber.
Interestingly, the top news story of the year wasn’t the U.S. presidential election or the summer Olympics. It was the iPhone 5. Microsoft must be so proud.
The election and Olympics trailed the iPhone 5 in second and third place, while other stories like Hurricane Sandy and the Academy Awards also made the top ten. “Speculation and excitement around the launch of iPhone 5 built up throughout the year, making this the most searched news story on Bing in 2012,” according to Microsoft.
The iPhone 5 was also the most searched consumer electronics product, while Microsoft’s Xbox took the number seven spot. Windows 8 barely made the list at number 10.
It’s crazy to think about how the iPhone has become such a cultural icon in only a few years. Windows Phone… not so much.
