Software giant Microsoft has reportedly sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses since the launch of its new operating system last month.

Microsoft's chief marketing and financial officer for Windows, Tami Reller, hailed the success of Windows 8 during a presentation at the Credit Suisse Annual Tech Conference earlier today.

According to a report on Reuters, about Windows 8's lack of Start Menu and its mixed tablet/desktop interface.

Although it is worth noting that the licenses sold to PC manufacturers will also be included in that 40 million.

Reller's comments follow on from a disclosure by Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, earlier this month where he claimed 4 million Windows 8 upgrades had been sold during its first few days on sale.
