Apple to Maps Manager: You’re Fired. Oh, Good Luck Finding Your Way Out of the Building.

Now that Apple SVP Eddy Cue has had some time to assess the debacle that was the iOS 6 Maps launch, he’s taking decisive steps to make sure it never happens again. He has fired Rich Williamson, the guy who oversaw the development of Apple’s mobile mapping software, which launched with enough flaws to prompt a public apology from CEO Tim Cook.

Williamson, who has been with Apple for more than a decade — most recently as senior director of iOS platform services — was cut loose right before the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S., a person with direct knowledge of the matter tells AllThingsD. It’s not yet clear if Apple has found a replacement for him.

Williamson’s sacking follows the high-profile ouster of former iOS software chief Scott Forstall, who was pushed out of the company over the troubled Maps rollout, among other things.

News of Williamson’s departure from Apple was first reported by Bloomberg.

Apple declined comment.
