Apple’s planned headquarters delayed, won’t open until 2016

Cupertino, we have a problem.

Apple’s spaceship-like headquarters will likely not open its doors before mid-2016. That’s because earlier this month, the tech company submitted an updated version of its proposal to the City of Cupertino.

The company, which hoped to break ground on the new campus sometime this year, will likely not begin work on the proposed facility until at least 2013, according to a report by Bloomberg.

“They could conceivably break ground in 2013, but only if everything goes smoothly,” David Brandt, Cupertino’s city manager, said, according to Bloomberg. “The project is running a little bit slow.”

The changes in the updated proposal are subtle, but they are enough to cause Apple to project a later end date than what it had when the late Steve Jobs presented the project to the City Council last year.

Most notably, the updated plans call for a free-standing 1,000-seat auditorium to be moved farther away from one of the surrounding roads. The new plan also calls for more parking at the facility as well as an additional building to house utility equipment.

The updated plans are expected to be posted on the Web for the public after Thanksgiving, once the city has added enough servers to handle all of the traffic its expects from Apple fans, the Bloomberg report says.
