Passbook Gets Explanatory Paragraph, Still Seems Silly

Passbook

I have to admit, I was intrigued by Passbook when I first heard of it. An app that keeps my airline and movie tickets together with my coupons and customer loyalty cards seems like a good idea. For now, however, Passbook in iOS 6 seems like a placeholder to me, an app with no real purpose in and of itself, a place to link to other apps.

Apple quietly added a little explanation in the form of a paragraph in the iTunes Store page for Passbook apps which shows, at least, that they’re planning on more and that they understand that we all might feel a bit nonplused about one of the bigger features of the new iOS.

The following paragraph, accessed via the Passbook app on an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad running iOS 6, is easily found when you tap the App Store button at the bottom of the Passbook app.

Passbook is the simplest way to store your boarding passes, tickets, coupons, gift cards and more in one place. With Passbook, you can scan your iPhone or iPod touch to check in for a flight, get into a movie, or redeem a coupon. Wake your iPhone or iPod touch, and passes appear on your Lock screen at the appropriate time and place. Explore our collection of apps that work with Passbook and check back often as new partners will be added regularly.

Passbook could become the premier electronic wallet for a lot of people, and it’s great that Apple seems to be moving forward, even with something as simple as an explanation to users who may feel the same way I do.

And again, I’m excited, because this sounds like it has such potential. I hope that Apple and app developers figure out how this all works, soon, though, because I’m really tired of tapping through and being offered Target, MLB, and Fandango apps.
