How to: Turn on iOS 6 Do Not Track

Apple says that iOS 6 ships with more than 200 new features. Whereas Facebook integration and panoramic photo capture get the headlines, one of the nicer features is the ability to turn off in-app ad tracking. Granted, Apple isn’t yet enforcing the iOS 6 Do Not Track (a.k.a. Advertising Identifier) tag, but the hook is already in there and eventually advertisers will be forced to go away.

To activate iOS 6 Do Not Track, go to Settings > General > About > Advertising > Limit Ad Tracking and tap “On.”

For what it’s worth, tapping “Learn More” delivers the following boilerplate from Apple:

Ad Tracking
iOS 6 introduces the Advertising Identifier, a non-permanent, non-personal, device identifier, that apps will use to give you more control over advertisers’ ability to use tracking methods. If you choose to limit ad tracking, apps are not permitted to use the Advertising Identifier to serve you targeted ads. In the future all apps will be required to user the Advertising Identifier. However, until then you may still receive targeted ads.

No, the iOS 6 Do Not Track (a.k.a. Advertising Identifier) tag isn’t yet a hard stop for advertisers, but Apple is working in that direction and, in the mean time, you can keep the honest advertisers (if any) at arm’s length.
