For a Match Three game, Last Temple 2 is surprisingly action packed. It's excellent fun, also.

Match Three puzzlers aren't always overly gripping or exciting. As much as they may be addictive, fast reactions aren't always needed. This isn't the case with Last Temple 2, a Match Three game that's more arcade-style in nature than puzzle-based.

Each stage consists of a board of tiles, each with different patterns on them and each colored beige. To complete the level, all tiles must be turned blue. To do this, players must match up three or more of the same pattern to clear it. It's a very simple idea, as is so often the case with Match Three games. It's the execution that makes Last Temple 2 stand out, more so.

It's possible to be meticulous and take one's time to determine the best route for clearing the tiles. Given the often quite tight time limit, however, it's advisable to be quick. Accumulating combo bonuses by completing moves quickly is further encouragement to push on and react at speed. As the game progresses, power-ups appear to aid matters. A meteor style move, for instance, can change a variety of tiles to blue with one tap, while a bomb can clear a larger area. Impediments also emerge such as locked tiles and green sludge that grows across the tile board, further encouraging speed, can hinder players' progress.

It all adds up to make a furiously frantic yet highly enjoyable Match Three title. It feels less casual than most games within the genre, veering towards a challenging way of gaming. There's no GameCenter support for now, which is disappointing and leads players to rely on the increasingly dated OpenFeint, but other than that, Last Temple 2 ticks all the relevant boxes. It even manages to look pretty glorious on the iPad for such a simple concept.
