We first looked at the original FiLMiC Pro app late last year and gave it four out of five gold stars in all categories. The feature-rich video recording app set standards high for the native iOS camera app as it came with many professional features. The developers have brought it back as the next generation video app, and they claim that when combined with the iPhone 4S, it beats the $5,000 Sony FS100 and ties with the $13,000 Canon C300.

FiLMiC Pro 2 is packed with many features that make it ideal for anyone looking to record professional quality videos on their iPhone 4S or iPhone 5. It transforms the native iOS camera by providing users with a real time 4x zoom as well as complete control over white balance, frame rates, focus and exposure.

It’s a little confusing to use at first as there are a lot of buttons and features to explore, but tapping on the information button at the bottom of the screen pulls up a quick tutorial. Focus Lock, Exposure Lock, White Balance and Torch options are all displayed in the lower left side of the screen. The app presents users with a double reticle mode so that the focus and exposure reticles come with spot sampling and can be moved.

There’s a settings page where users can change the presets like the variable capture frame rates and playback frame rates as well as the orientation, resolution and encoding. There’s actually more features than I have time to explain, but the point is that users have all the tools necessary to create professional and high quality videos.

I tested the app out to see just how impressive it truly is, and I was pleasantly surprised by the results. I felt a little overwhelmed by all the options that are available, but the video quality was quite remarkable. The features that stood out the most to me are the different preset options that range from SloMo to Time Lapse, the audio level metering, the easy-to-use real time zoom option and the capability to instantly share recordings to Facebook, YouTube, DropBox, Vimeo, Tumblr or an FTP Server.

While FiLMiC Pro 2 is the ideal app for creating professional videos, the current version has a few bugs that need polished out. The app crashed a couple of times and some areas seem a little buggy. I thought maybe it was just me, but the App Store reviews seem to state the same issues. I’m sure a new update is in the works to solve these issues.

Whether users wish to create their own movies, make a compelling YouTube video or direct a music video, FiLMiC Pro 2 is ideal for those on a budget. It beats out its competition by a landslide, which makes it easily recommendable for all users looking to upgrade their iOS camera.
