iOS jailbreak developer Ryan Petrich has successfully gotten the old iOS Maps app, which was powered by Google and boasted features like Street View and walking directions, running under iOS 6. The port is said to be unstable at the moment, but it’s working, and with a little more work, it could be available in all its glory to users with jailbroken iOS devices.

As you can see in the video below, Google Maps will run under iOS 6, though Petrich describes it as “still crashy” and not yet ready for the public.

This is good news for users who are already missing Google Maps. Apple replaced the service with its own solution in iOS 6, and it boasts some welcome new features like 3D Flyover and turn-by-turn navigation. However, Apple’s solution is still in its early stages, and its maps are nowhere near as accurate as Google’s — as we’ve learned since iOS made its public debut last week.

For those who rely on Maps, it’s been a huge disappointment. Apple’s solution will get better, of course, but in the meantime, it will be nice to install the old Google-powered Maps app on your jailbroken devices. Hopefully it’ll be ready soon.
