On my 4s, the turn by turn worked great, at least in the chicagoland area.
However, the battery really got drained very quickly!! Started at about 90% and by the end of the hour drive, it was about 30%!! Yikes...is that to be expected?

And hour of constant GPS use, yes, that sounds about right -- and it isn't new. Using the old Google Maps app with GPS turned on would do the same after an hour. Best to get a car charger for your phone -- they are cheap.
Gary, the new Apple maps is horrendous, according to WSJ and others. Front page of the WSJ shows the difference between google maps and apple maps and its unbelievable Apple would release such a poor app. Possibly because they are not in the app business. (only the REMOTE and MAPS app, right?) I am surprised you are describing this app. Or is this the only part of the app that works. Seriously, do you have a financial arrangement with Apple or is your site totally independent?
So "according to WSJ and others" -- how about "according to YOU?" What do YOU think about it? Have you even used it?
I have, and I fail to see that much of a difference. Street View was nice, but it took years for Google to add that feature. Apple Maps is brand new. And it has Flyover, which isn't bad.
I was one of the many people that wanted spoken turn-by-turn directions on my iPhone. Had to go to a 3rd-party app to get it, while Android users had it built-in. I'm glad Apple took matters into its own hands to get this feature in there, even if it meant taking a risk.
I resent your implication that I put my opinion up for sale. First, this is a tutorial, showing you how the feature works. I'm not reviewing the app or comparing it to the old one. Second, my opinion is NOT for sale. MacMost is an independent site and in the rare occasion that I give an opinion I give it honestly.
Respect Gary. I rely on sites like Macmost to get my apple info, so I have not upgraded to ios6 nor the apple maps app. And will delay until guys like you figure out all the nuances.
Your relationship with Apple as an independent is great news. If a product is not ready for prime time, I hope you will tell us straight, which I now believe you will.

Thanks Clement. I'm an "enthusiast" so I will probably like a lot of things Apple does. But not always. For instance, I hated their exclusivity to AT&T when the iPhone first came out. I hate the iWeb app (notice I never really did any tutorials on it). They have always been bad about changing cable types (video displays, and now the dock cables) without providing adapters in a timely manner and a reasonable price. Just examples.
Just ordered my 5 great video. I have a gps in the truck now that still has problems finding it's way. Besides the fact to keep up with the maps and road conditions you have to constantly pay a few every year for updates.
I think it's great apple has finally taken control of maps and I'm sure with a little work it can only get better.
Gary, I live in Australia & travel extensively into country areas. I see you mentioned that this app is for use with 4G. We only have 4G in very limited areas, so is it going to work in Oz? As yet I haven't updated my iPad, should I stay with Google maps?
I will work with any wireless data connection. What I mean is that if you have an iPad with WiFi only, and no way to access data through wireless carriers, then you can't use it -- it has no way to get the stream of maps you would need.
I recently purchased an iPhone4s with iOS 6 on it. The navigation in Maps seems to work fine with Siri giving me audible directions. The problem is if I am on route to a destination following the navigation in maps, and then change my mind and don't want to go to that destination, how do I tell Siri to cancel the navigation?
Tap on the middle of the screen. A couple of buttons appear at the top. Hit "end" or "cancel" in the upper left corner.
