Australians sorely tempted by iPhone 5

By

The results of a new survey suggest a mind-boggling 80% of Australians are planning to buy an iPhone 5, and that Samsung stands to lose a large chunk of its installed base.

A survey of almost 1400 Australian consumers by MobilePhoneFinder.com.au found that 80.6% of Australians are planning to buy an iPhone 5.

That proportion is so high that we are inclined to suggest it was either a survey limited to people planning to buy a new phone, or merely a web poll rather than a properly designed and executed survey - it's a fair bet that most visitors to MobilePhoneFinder.com.au are thinking of getting a new phone.

Definitive figures are hard to come by, but it seems that the iPhone represents somewhere between one third and half of Australia's installed base of smartphones.

Perhaps more meaningful was the survey's finding that 62.9% of current Samsung users were planning to buy an iPhone 5.

Samsung has apparently shifted a bucketload of Galaxy S III smartphones in recent months, and it's unlikely that more than a few of those owners are looking to switch to a new phone already.

Even so, Samsung executives are unlikely to be happy with the idea that almost two-thirds of their longer-term customers are planning to switch to Apple.

The iPhone 5 features most important to potential buyers were faster Wi-Fi and 4G (top ranked by one in four), larger screen (just over one in five) and improved battery life (just under one in four).

MobilePhoneFinder.com.au suggests buyers compare plans and prices before purchasing (well they, would, wouldn't they?), consider purchasing the iPhone outright rather than on a plan (and then be sure to include SIM-only providers - companies such as Amaysim - in the comparison), and consider holding off the purchase until the excitement has died down and carriers offer more attractive deals.

More than two million iPhone 5s have been pre-ordered.
