How Do I Correctly Identify My iPhone So I Can Sell It?

This article is more than 10 years old.

Judging from my mailbox, quite a lot of you are looking to sell your existing iPhone but you're not entirely sure which handset you own, and this is making it tricky for you to find out how much your current iDevice is worth.

It seems that the two questions readers are having trouble finding answers to are:

  • What exact model do I own?
  • How much storage capacity does it have?

If you can't remember what you bought -- and if you can't, don't worry, you're not alone, I'd forgotten the capacity of my iPhone 4 -- then there's quite an easy way to find out. However, unlike most consumer electronic devices, you're not going to find the answer you're looking for on the back of the device. Switch is on and tap on Settings > General > About. Now scroll down to Model and make a note of what you see there.

The model number will have the following layout:

XY123ZZ

X will be either M, P or F. M stands for a standard retail handset, while a P denotes a personalized or engraved device. F stands for factory refurbished and these are handsets that have gone back to Apple with a problem, and have been fixed before being rereleased, usually as warranty replacements.

The ZZ will be a single of double character country code. In the US this will usually be LL.

The part of the model number that we're interested in is the Y123 part. This will identify the exact handset you have.

Armed with that information, head over to JailBreak FAQ who have the most comprehensive listing of iPhone -- and iPad and iPod touch -- model numbers that I've come across. Not only will the model number give you the color -- which should be apparent anyway -- but you will also get storage capacities and what network the device will connect to.

This is all the information you need to be able to correctly identify your handset and sell it so you can pick up a newer model.

Good luck!
