Another Way to Take Your iPad Underwater

LifeProof, which claims to make the thinnest waterproof iPhone case, has gone one step further for its iPad case by doing away with the plastic membrane that goes over the screen.

The new design comes from the realization that the face of the iPad is already waterproof – it’s an uninterrupted piece of glass.

So the design of the new cover, called LifeProof nüüd, puts a seal around the glass then encloses the rest of the pad with a waterproof backing.

Although the pad is supposed to be waterproof to 6.6 feet, it’s not really for underwater use. In fact, because water is conductive, just like a finger, the screen may read a water drop as a finger press, submersing the screen completely may make it unusable.

But the real idea behind the case is for using the iPad around water, like in the kitchen or by the pool, or in foul weather – it is also supposed to be dust- and snow-proof and is supposed to withstand a drop from four feet.

Putting the case on takes some effort. First, you are supposed to test it for waterproofness with an included dummy screen. If it passes, then you have to take the case apart, making sure the gaskets are clean and seated properly. You then snap it together.

This is no small task. It takes patience and a vicelike grip to seal the thing up. I found it works best to put it on a solid surface and press with the flat of your hands.

Even though the dunk test with the dummy screen was a success, I was timid about risking my loaner tablet. But a generous splashing did it no harm.

I also like that there is a clip on the bottom that opens for charging and syncing the iPad, so you don’t have wrestle the case off for every little thing.

The nüüd case is available at Best Buy stores and online for $150, with an accessory cover and stand available for $30. Bundled, the case and cover are $160.
