Bug Invasion Review

Nothing is worse than when bugs decide to take over a house. If I see two spiders in my house within a few days of each other I’m on the phone with the exterminator. In Bug Invasion, a house is overrun with bugs but instead of relying on an exterminator, the owner of the house takes matters into his own hands and turns his house into a tower defense board. With unique towers and clever artwork, players equip the house for an all-out war on all bug invaders.

It seems that tower defense games are easy to find these days. The rules are pretty simple: build weapon towers to take out enemies as they approach the home base. In Bug Invasion, towers come in the flavor of soda cups that launch drops of soda, rubber duckies that spit water and other such clever devices. Money is collected as bugs are killed off and more money means the ability to build more towers for stronger waves of bugs. This game makes tower building easy and explicitly maps out the spaces where towers can be built and here are only a certain amount of spaces available. This is something I don’t particularly like because I usually like the freedom to place as many towers as possible wherever I want.

I think a kid that uses household items to take out invading bugs is a fun take on the genre. The artwork is great and the bugs are characters that are anyone can get behind terminating. On the other hand, the music gets irritating, to the point where I had to turn it off. And although I like the premise of the game, I feel that it can be repetitive and somewhat limited. It just doesn’t provide enough new elements to hold player interest for more than a few rounds.

To sum it all up, I do think that Bug Invasion is a unique and fun twist on tower defense games. It’s out now for $0.99 so the price is right for what it has to offer. It does have some drawbacks in repetition and depth, but for those who don’t mind, it’s a quirky little game to have on board.
