Gadget Lab Show: E-readers and Apple v. Samsung

This week on the Gadget Lab show, the gang talks about a few new e-readers hitting the market and what the outcome of the Apple v. Samsung trial means.

First up, reviews editor Michael Calore and staff writer Roberto Baldwin talk e-reader and tablet news. Amazon is expected to release a new Kindle Fire next week. Sony also released a new touch-based e-reader recently. Compared to other tablets like the Nook and Amazon’s yet-to-be announced new offerings, Sony seems to be playing catch up in this space. For instance, although the screen is nice, it has weird artifacting effects that its competitors don’t.

Next, staff writer Christina Bonnington joins Mike to talk about the jury verdict in the “patent case of the century,” Apple v. Samsung. The jury ruled heavily in favor of Apple, which means we could see increased prices on Android products in the future, and perhaps more smartphone design diversity. But the case is still up in the air in some respects, as Judge Koh can adjust the amount Samsung owes up to 300 percent, and the hearing for Apple’s final injunction on Samsung’s products won’t take place until December.
