OS X Mountain Lion, Apple’s latest desktop operating system, has seen mass adoption since launching at the tail end of last month, and after shifting some two million units in the first 48 hours alone, a large ensemble of Mac users are currently getting to grips with the new features.
Priced in at $19.99, it was the fastest-selling iteration of OS X in the Cupertino company’s history, and with iOS having become increasingly popular over the past five years, it is something of an amalgamation of both desktop and mobile. Notifications, Reminders, Game Center, and iMessage are just a few key features to have trickled onto the main stage, and having used ML for the best part of the week, I have to say they do work rather nicely.
In all honesty, Game Center is pretty unrefined on iOS, with games seeming to disconnect on a frequent basis whether on 3G or a fiber-optic Wi-Fi connection, so it does seem a little ahead of its time on OS X. Nevertheless, Apple has done a stellar job in improving its desktop offering, and for less than twenty bucks, few can have any complaints.
As we continue to assess the new features of Mountain Lion (10.8), a new beta of Mountain Lion (10.8.1) has just been seeded to developers. Build 12B17 is just over 43MB in size, and arrives scarcely a week after build 12B13 was seeded. There are no known issues with the new entry, although Apple does request developers focus their attentions on Active Directory, iCal, Microsoft Exchange in Mail, PAC proxies in Safari, SMB, USB, as well as Wi-Fi and audio when connected to a Thunderbolt Display.
As is usually the case with these 10.8.x updates, this looks to be another maintenance update as the company looks to continue improving its newly-released OS X version. That said, with no apparent release notes attached, it’s not for certain, so we’ll be keeping on the lookout for any more information should it surface.
