Fujitsu's Android-Powered Stylistic M532 Tablet Is Ready for Abuse

Branching off from its usual lineup of Windows-powered tablets, Fujitsu looks to grab a share of the Android tablet market with its new rugged Stylistic M532 Tablet.

Fujitsu today announced the availability of its newest tablet, the Stylistic M532.

The M532 will run on Google's Android 4.0 mobile operating system, a bit of a departure from the company's current lineup of predominantly Windows-powered slates. Inside, the tablet features a lot of familiar components, but the M532 looks to distinguish itself with added durability and security features.

The Fujitsu Stylistic M532 represents the company's first foray into the realm of Android tablets—a crowded field at the moment. Its current lineup of Stylistic Slate PCs feature Intel Atom processors and run Windows 7, making them closer to laptops and netbooks in terms of features and price. Fujitsu looks to carry over the professional appeal of its Stylistic offering, positioning the M532 as a high-end, business-friendly tablet, sidestepping the current trend towards budget-friendly consumer products like Google's own Nexus 7.

Inside, the M532 features many of the same components found in the current generation of Android tablets. You'll find the increasingly common quad-core Tegra 3 chip from Nvidia, with 1GB RAM and 32GB of built-in storage. All the usual trappings are here as well, including 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, and a microSD card for expanded storage. The 10.1-inch IPS display features a 1,280-by-800-pixel resolution, which is solid, but not quite up to the pixel-packed displays found on tablets like the New Apple iPad and the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity.

What sets the M532 apart is its purported "built-tough" tag, with a MIL-STD-810G rating. It's a standard the military uses to designate products that are able to withstand some level of impact, shock, dust, and water—though the exact limits of the M532 aren't obvious on Fujitsu's product page. Adding to its beefed-up exterior are some optional security features like Absolute CompuTrace, for tracking down any would-be thieves.

The Fujitsu Stylistic M532 tablet is available now, directly from Fujitsu, for a starting price of $549. It's a bit steep for Android tablets, and whether or not that added level of durability and security is worth it remains to be seen.
