Intel, Chinese orgs set up China Open Source Cloud League

Intel and several Chinese organizations have set up a technical community which will focus on the development and support of open-source cloudplatform OpenStack, and hopes to increase China's contribution to the OpenStack global community.

According to a report Thursday by Sina Tech, Intel Asia-Pacific Research and Development, Chinese Internet company Sina, China Standard Software, and Shanghai Jiaotong University signed an agreement to set up the China Open Source Cloud League.

The alliance will focus on the development, support, performance optimization and large-scale development of the OpenStack platform. It will also work to drive the adoption of OpenStack among enterprises in the country and to increase China's contribution to the OpenStack global community, the report said.

In the Sina Tech report, He Jingxiang, general manager of Intel Asia-Pacific Research Center, said open source has a great momentum in China, however, there is more to be done in the open source cloud space. Thus the league hopes to drive the adoption of open-source cloud in the Chinese market, he said.

The report noted that Sina, one of the founding members, has already been using the OpenStack platform for sometime. Fu Qingming, general manager of Sina R&D Center, said, open source cloud has become an effective business model and is widely accepted.

According to the report, OpenStack is popular among Chinese developers and companies. It noted that formal figures said the number of OpenStack downloads in China is second to downloads in the United States. However, the development of OpenStack in China is still "very limited", it noted.
