MacMost Now 741: New Features Of Safari 6

Safari 6 has arrived for Lion and Mountain Lion. Look at changes to Safari including a smart search field, offline reading list and faster JavaScript. But the ability to look at RSS feeds is gone.

Where is the 'Activity' icon in Safari 6.0? It was under the Window tab. I finally went to Firefox and used Download helper add on. Can you still download video content in Safari 6.0?

    You have a great site!

    Thanks, Jim

Not sure what you mean by the Activity icon. What are you trying to do, exactly?
What do you mean by downloading video content? If a web site lets you download video content, you can still do it. But perhaps you were doing something else to try to get videos from web pages?

Under Window in the top menu bar there used to be an Activity option in the drop down. I used to click on Activity and then find a video playing in the Activity window and press Option and double click and the Video would download to my computer. I used to pull YouTube style webinars from the web so I could watch them on my iPhone. Safari 6.0 there is no Activity in the Window menu drop down. Is there still a way to download video in Safari 6.0?

Maybe if you turn on the Develop menu (in Advanced prefs) you will get what you want in there. The "web inspector" feature digs down into a page's contents.

I am also desperately trying to find this feature. It was awesome previously to be able to grab videos and place them in slides, but I can not figure out how to do it since the update. The inspector just looks like a mess and I can not find how to grab the video from it. Before the update it would save directly to downloads once you clicked on the video you were wanting.

It looks like Gary doesn't know how this feature worked prior to the upgrade. I've been trying to solve this, too. I hoped Gary would at least tell us how to capture Internet video with Safari now that the capture feature has been deep-sixed. I don't want to have to install Firefox. I want to use Safari!

I know exactly how it "worked" -- it wasn't a feature. It was just a technique for accessing the source of a page, using that to get the link to a video. Then using that link to download the video.
But that was never the right way to do it. The right way to do it is to get permission and instructions from the video creator as to how to download the video. Otherwise, you are basically violating copyright by taking the video without asking. And I not going to advocate that. I respect the rights of video creators and I think you should too.

Gary, how do you empty cache in Safari 6?

Go into Safari prefs. Advanced prefs. Turn on the Developer menu. It is an option in the Develop menu then.

I was wondering what you thought about the password section in Safari 6. I use 1password to protect all of my password and has done a great job (you can also access that through the safari browser). I trust 1password and know that it is secure, I was wondering how secure is the new safari 6 password and if it is as secure as 1password.

There is really no new password function in Safari 6. What is new is the ability to easily see and edit your passwords saved in Safari. Nothing has changed as far as security or anything.
1Password is still on a whole other level -- cross-browser, cross-machine, lots of password generation features, wallet features, etc.

Hello, I was wondering if I can use the iMessage with my contacts in msn messenger or if this is only with my contacts with apple. I do not pay for messaging service i just use the iMessage when I'm with internet home network.
    Thank you.

If you are asking about using the contact info (email address and name), then no, you'll need to put them in the Contacts app on your Mac so Messages can access them. Of course Messages will only work with other people with an iMessage account anyway, so this shouldn't be much of an issue.

    Hi Gary,

Wasn't that "about blank" I saw in the address line of your browser at the start of your video?
    Cheers

Yes. "about:blank" is a useful way to have a browser window open with nothing in it. Been around in almost all browsers since the dawn of the Web.

cannot download Mountain Lion from the App Store. App SAtore says that the Distribution File could not be verified. This is happening in other countries as well. Any ideas?

    thx/Jim

Ideas: Try later. Try using a different (faster, more reliable) connection. Try visiting an Apple Store and using their connection.

As I am very visual, I have allot of favorites saved at my Bookmarks Toolbar, with the help of Favicon I can find my bookmarks quickly. I don't see my self using Safari till it supports Favicons, thoughts?!

Seems to me, then, that Safari's features like Top Sites and the bookmarks and history page with cover flow at the top would be right up your alley.

I just did an update to 6.0 on Lion. Now when I re-open Safari after closing it by clicking the red button it re-opens to my home page, not all my previous tabs.. prior to the update it would re-open with all my previous tabs, which is what I want. I know the application is still open, but now it acts like I've closed it...I don't want to have to go to history to restore my tabs. Any advice?

Just check on the Preferences carefully to see what you have set there. Also, check in System Preferences, under General, to see if you have "Close windows when quitting..." checked.

Will Safari 6 be available for Snow Leopard in the near future.
I find Safari web browser very user friendly than all the other`s.
The new feature`s that you mentioned seem to be good.
I just checked the other day for new software, but i am up to date.

I doubt we will see Safari 6 for Snow Leopard.

I have just had another look at your video.
When you said RSS has gone. Mine has reader on it,and i have never used it before.
I have just clicked on it when your video was on,and up came your video, and it said you can print it, zoom in,and out. I have just clicked on it again, and your video is still on it. Can you save this video this way. Where does the reader disappear to? Gary

Reader is an unrelated function. It allows you to read articles and posts without the rest of the page visible. It was in Safari 5 as well.

Since the upgrade to Mountain Lion I get this error when trying to access Twitter, Facebook and bank site.:
"Safari can't open the page ?
Safari can't open the page "https://twitter.com/sessions" because Safari can't establish a secure connection to the server"twitter.com".

I don't know why the 's' is added to the url? - I just typed: 'twitter.com'

    Hope this makes sense?

The s is added to establish a secure connection (one that can't be sniffed between you an the server). Twitter does that. It is normal.
But not sure why you can't connect. The first thing I would check is the date and time on your Mac. Is that set correctly? If not, it could cause this issue.

I don`t know why they are not going to upgrade Safari 6 for Snow Leopard?
Thanks for the information you have provided for me Gary

Why? Well, why stop at Snow Leopard? How about Leopard. And Tiger? And OS 9? I guess the reason is that they have to stop somewhere. Every subversion of Safari for every OS takes some effort and has less return (less users will be affected). So they chose to do Lion and MLion and stop there. Some bloggers were surprised that they did it for Lion. Every software developer is faced with the same question every time they come out with a new version.

With Mountain Lion upgrade I no longer have the thinking circle thing both Safari and Mail while waiting for it to load. Do I have to set something in order to see it. Without it Iʻm not sure if its doing anything. I need visual clues.

    Kika Wai'Alae

Also before I would use my delete key to go back to the previous page on Safari but canʻt with the upgrade. Thanks

Lots of ways to go "back" -- Command+Left Arrow, or the two finger left-to-right gesture.

        Kika Wai'Alae

Ah, cool. What about my 1st question about the circle thing while waiting?

It isn't there anymore -- but it is just a visual signal. Look at the very right side of the address field for the X or the refresh arrow. When it is an X it means the page is loading (and you can click it to stop). When it finishes it changes to that reload arrow.

I recently downloaded the software update for Safari and Lion OS. I do not know if this is what is causing the problem I am now experiencing or not. I have several tabs open at one time. I am browsing a webpage with 200 items listed for sale. Maybe half way down the page or more, I see one that looks interesting, so I click on the link and read about. Once finished, I want to go back to the previous page at the point I was before, say half way or more down the page. I use two fingers to swipe away the page I just read, and I am returned to the previous page with all 200 listings on it, but I am not returned to the same spot on the page. Instead, it returns me to the top of the page, and I have to scroll down to page passing all of the stuff I already saw and did not want, just so I can get back to where I was. Anyone else having this problem, and do you know what is causing it?

Could be the way the page is coded. How about trying something different, then? Command+Click on the link so it opens in a new tab. Then read about it on the new tab. Then switch back to the previous tab (or close the current one).

Thanks, but I want it to work the way it used to. It was a lot faster that way. One can swipe things away a lot faster and easier than pressing buttons and clicking. Does anyone know how I can get it function properly again???

What about refreshing your Google search? I used that ALL the time -- search for something, navigate 3, 4, or 5 pages in, then want to quickly go back to the Google search results. There was the Orange "refresh" button in the Google search window. Now that the search and browser windows are one and the same, I can only refresh my current page. Is there a new similar function?

It sounds like you mean "snap back." I think that was removed some time ago. But there are so many ways to do something similar. I usually search for something, then Command+Click on a link to open it in a new tab. Then close that tab (Command+W) and you are back to the previous tab, which is the search results. You can also leave the tab open, jump to the previous and Command+click to open a third tab, etc.

How do I remove Safari 6 and Lion so I can go back to the older user friendly Snow Leopard and Safari 5.

Lion and Safari 6 ARE NOT USER FRIENDLY and is starting to make me HATE using my Apple iMac.

That's very difficult to do. What, specifically are you having problems with? Perhaps start a new forum post (http://macmost.com/start-a-new-forum-topic) with some specifics of what you are having trouble with and I can help you adjust. It can be tough to get used to changes when you have been used to doing things a certain way for a long time.

Hi Guy i am having the same bother with system has you seem to be. It`s not just Safari 6 but "Preview"there is no "save has"and i can`t figure out the top to change the name. I use Photoshop, and it`s effected that has well.
It does not show you the number of items you have at the bottom of the window, plus that sidebar if it get`s any thinner you will not be able to see it.
Change is not always good for the best, has they say.

Mountain Lion offers many more ways to move and rename files than SL did. You can still Save As (hold down option when you go to the File menu) -- but Save As doesn't just change the name, it makes a copy of the document with a new name. The File, Rename option (new in ML) will rename it. And you've got Duplicate and all sorts of other options too.

Hello There, I have checked the Developer tab and got things enabled. But yet, i can't get the Activity which will enable me to see the files so i can download the videos. Does it mean the activity is gone forever or still i need to do more settings? thnx.

That has been replaced by a far more useful tool (the web inspector, then timeline recording, etc). But that is a tool for developers, not for downloading videos. For downloading videos, you should contact the video creator, ask permission, and ask them to provide it for you. Many do. But not all. It is up to them whether to make it easy for you or not allow it.

I have just updated to Mountain Lion, and i am just trying to get used to it.
One big mistake i am making i keep going to the Red light to get to a previous window, but i keep ending up off the internet. I then use the history list to get back on. I have just noticed up above what Guy says that`s the same problem i am having when you say that it can be tough to get used to changes when you have been used to doing things a certain way for a long time.I am just going to click on your link.

    Mr Anthony Cotton

I am back again like Guy says above, because i getting annoyed when evan in my email i automatically click the Red light, and i end up off the internet. I can only get back on by using the history.
You send me your news letter, and then i click on your link which takes me to your website. I bookmark it,then i return to my email box before.
I can`t do this any more Gary

Why click the red button? That closes a window. Just browse to a new location using the current window. Or, if you have closed the window, use Command+N (File, New Window) instead of History.

    Mr Anthony Cotton

I think you misunderstood me. When i get your posts through the email i open it up and you always have a link to click on to get to your site.
I click on your link to your site, and when i get to your site i bookmark it,and to return to my email i click on the Red light, and i am straight back into my email simple has that.
I did not have to do the things you said, when i had Snow Leopard. I just did the one click. It seems Guy is having the same problems. My opinion on Mountain Lion Change is not always good for the best has they say.

When you click the red close button, it closes the browser window. Under it is your Mail window with the email. You could also just hide Safari, or switch to Mail using a number of techniques. There are many many ways to do things like this -- it is just a matter of finding out what works best for you.

    Mr Anthony Cotton

I am beginning to understand now i think? I did not think about the way you have put it. Has you know i am not very technically minded, thats what i am doing on this site. I do not know a number of techniques.
It`s the Safari toolbar at the top i have to get used to,because it`s more like Googles Chrome now. Thanks for putting up with me Gary.
