Bolt! Review (iPhone, iPad)

You can picture the lightbulb going off above someone's head at Rock Live : an endless runner mixed with the fastest man on Earth, Usain Bolt. OK, that's good but it needs something else. What about...zombies? Too generic, too saturated. How about...pirates? That'll do.

In this most unlikely of combinations, you take on the role of Bolt as he leaps over flaming barrels, and ducks under containers while chasing a pirate menace across the Caribbean. His aim is to gather all the loot littered along the seashore before the pirates can, while also dodging their occasional gun-fire.

The controls are as simple as the gameplay, which is to say you swipe downwards on the screen to slide under crates, and swipe upwards to dodge any ground-based obstacles. A double upwards-swipe will make Bolt jump even higher. The further you run, the higher your score.

Dotted throughout each randomly-generated game are coins which you can use to buy upgrades: a head-start at the beginning of each attempt, for example, or an extra life should you stumble at any point during a run. You can even pick up some wallpapers for your iOS device if you've run out of other things to buy.

As well as coins, you also collect bubbles of Gatorade which increase your fuel meter, which in turn makes Usain sprint a little quicker. Drinking that nasty, filthy, life-giving, boring old water on the other hand will slow him down. Yes, if nothing else, Bolt! has at least given us a solid entry for this year's Questionable Marketing Message of the Year award.
