OnApp Cloud v3.0 Accelerates Cloud Adoption with VMware Support

OnApp Cloud Now Supports 85 Percent of the Hypervisor Market; Also Includes New Cloud Boot Hardware Auto-Discovery Feature to Reduce Cloud Deployment and Scaling Costs

BOSTON--()--Today, at HostingCon 2012, OnApp announced version 3.0 of its OnApp Cloud software, which includes support for VMware and means that OnApp’s cloud management platform now supports approximately 85 percent of the hypervisor market. With OnApp Cloud v3.0, service providers can run their VMware ESXi hypervisors alongside Xen and KVM hypervisors on the same cloud platform, via the same intuitive OnApp Control Panel. By enabling multiple virtualization environments to be consolidated and managed in a single cloud platform, OnApp Cloud v3.0 further reduces the total cost of ownership for cloud service providers.

The new VMware hypervisor support in OnApp Cloud v3.0 also enables service providers to offer cloud services to the large installed base of VMware users, and grow their customer base, while VMware users can host their applications with hundreds of providers around the world and take advantage of OnApp’s cost-effective, feature-rich cloud platform. VMware is used extensively by telcos, systems integrators and large hosting providers, and is the primary hypervisor for 67 percent of enterprises according to the latest V-Index report from Vanson Bourne.

“Gartner predicts that more than 60 percent of enterprises will have some form of cloud computing in place by the end of next year. This, combined with the fact that a large majority of companies rely on VMware for their virtualized IT deployments, made the development of OnApp Cloud v3.0 with VMware support the logical next step,” said Ditlev Bredahl, OnApp CEO. “In the past two years, we have helped deploy more than 1,000 public clouds, and now that we’ve extended that capability to VMware-based organizations, we’re eager to help accelerate further adoption as the cloud continues to mature.”

OnApp Cloud v3.0 also introduces Cloud Boot, a new provisioning method that makes it easier for cloud providers to roll out new hypervisor servers. With Cloud Boot, OnApp Cloud v3.0 can auto-discover and auto-provision new hardware as soon as it’s plugged into the network, rather than having to go through the traditional installation process for each hypervisor. This new feature cuts approximately one hour of deployment time per hypervisor, making it much quicker and more cost effective to deploy or scale up a cloud.

“OnApp Cloud was designed by former service providers with a unique goal in mind: to create a cloud platform tailored specifically for providers that delivers an all-in-one solution complete with flexible user management, metering calculations, billing flexibility, autoscaling and load balancing,” said John Vlacich, senior analyst at Cloud Spectator. “It’s ideal for any service provider that wants to get to market quickly, control their costs and see a return on investment as soon as possible. OnAppCloud 3.0 is sure to entice the many enterprises and service providers currently using VMware ESXi and looking for a cost-efficient, simple way to migrate to the cloud and manage their cloud services.”

OnApp Cloud v3.0 will also fully integrate OnApp Storage, which solves the performance and cost issues of traditional Storage Area Network (SAN) products by using local disks in hypervisors to create a high performance distributed SAN. In addition, OnApp Cloud v3.0 will include new capabilities for OnApp CDN – the federated content delivery network (CDN) that takes advantage of service providers’ spare cloud infrastructure. The new version adds support for live video streaming using the most common streaming protocols, including: Adobe HDS, RTMP/RTMPE, RTSP/RTP, Apple iPhone and Silverlight. OnApp’s federated CDN now includes more than 90 locations worldwide, and is quickly gaining momentum with 40 percent month-on-month growth.
