Lion Server: Default website unreachable after adding second website

After adding a second website, the default website can no longer be loaded. Web-based services such as wikis and profile manager maybe unreachable as well.

When using name based virtual web hosting, set each domain IP address to "any" in the Server.app web section.

There are several important considerations when using virtual web hosting:

  • The web service will respond to requests based upon the server's ip address the request was received on before the domain name or URL requested is considered.

  • Web based services are only accessible through the default, wildcard site. Services such as Profile Manager will still be running, but unreachable if a second website is assigned to the server's only ip address in the Server.app's web section.

  • Additional information regarding virtual web hosting can be viewed at http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/vhosts/.
