Apple Store staircase flagged as Peeping Tom black spot

Apple’s flagship store in Hong Kong has been placed on a black list by the region’s biggest political party after fears were raised that its trademark glass staircase could provide Peeping Toms with a perfect vantage point for some sneaky up-skirt viewing.

The Women’s Affairs Committee of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong (DAB) has taken it upon itself to raise awareness about the problems that can ensue when glass walkways and short summer skirts meet head-on in the former colony.

Its latest report (via MIC Gadget) into the region’s major black spots lists the IFC Mall’s Apple Store, whose Steve Jobs-designed glass staircase is causing concern.

Although the steps themselves are opaque, it is still possible to cop an eyeful from below through the gaps between the steps ... err, apparently.

Things could get a whole lot worse in a few months if rumours of a second Apple Store opening in the SAR are true.

Apple failed to respond to The Reg’s request for comment on this one, but it’s unlikely to change its iconic staircase design just because the local ladies here in Hong Kong have a penchant for tiny skirts.

The pro-Beijing DAB is recommending women to remain alert at all times and immediately report any suspected incidents of covert papping to the police.

Incidentally, if you’re in the region and worried about camera-toting local pervs, some other areas to avoid are the Central Library footbridge, Kowloon Bay MTR, Festival Walk and the escalators at the airport. ®
