Thirsty Fish is a mix between physics and endless runner style games. This casual title has an addictive quality that makes it a pleasure to play. It’s one of those games that’s easy to pick-up-and-play but at the same time it’s also easy to put it back down and forget about it.

The goal in Thirsty Fish is that players are on a treasure hunt. After casting out an endless net to collect gold coins, it’s evident that more than gold coins have been captured. Gamers must free the fish from the net because apparently the fish are getting thirsty. This is an odd reason as I’m not sure if fish actually ever do get thirsty, but I’ve seen stranger things in games.

What makes Thirsty Fish challenging is that players must keep their finger in the water at all times while slashing through the net to let the poor fish escape all while avoiding the gold coins. It sounds easier than it really is because sometimes there are groups of fish surrounded by coins—making it hard to maneuver around them effectively. Slashing through a coin or letting a fish go without freeing it results in one of three lost lives. When all three lives are lost, it’s game over.

As gamers advance, they go instantly from one world to the next. The level of difficult goes up as the net speed, number of fish and types of fish increases. When the game ends, players can easily pick up where the game ended. There are power-ups that can be purchased with the gold coins like fish magnets and coin immunity, but it seems like it takes forever to earn enough coins to purchase one. Ideally, additional coins may be purchased as an IAP—which may be the only option for some gamers as the power-ups can only be used once.

There are a few other aspects to the game other than slicing through the net. Thirsty Fish comes complete with Game Center leaderboards and achievements for those who love to compete against friends. Also, there is a separate meditation mode where gamers slash through nothing but net to create artwork. I had a hard to creating anything other than a smiley face as the net slashes are too big.

Thirsty Fish is a simple game that is great for anyone needing something to play for a quick minute or two while sitting on the bus, but it’s not something that most will want to play for hours because the game play gets repetitive. Overall, it’s still a pretty fun game with a nice addictive element. If you’re a fan of this type of game, it is definitely worth checking out now that the price has dropped down to less than a buck.
