The folks at Tapulous (now part of Disney Mobile) have been defining the rhythm game on iOS with their Tap Tap franchise for as long as the genre has existed on this platform. And no one does it better. The latest incarnation surfaced today, Tap Tap Revenge Tour and it has the same fantastic controls with some cool gameplay twists along with killer graphics and a vast new catalog of pop, dance, hip hop and rock numbers.

Like all of the Tapulous games the basic object is simple. Players follow the cadence of a selected song and tap fingers on the right frets as notes cross the play-line, or goal. Staying on beat builds combos and scores, and sustained notes and bends are accomplished with device shakes and finger holds. Tap Tap Revenge Tour has a new mechanic too – slicing. Borrowing from Fruit Ninja some notes must be swiped rather than tapped making it necessary to look carefully before putting fingers to screen.

The core of the game is in Tour Mode where players perform as the opening act, then supporting act and finally the headliners. As they traverse the globe aweing fans with their mad tapping skills, the difficulty level and bling they can afford keeps building.

The music catalog is a top-40 lover’s dream, packed as it is with over 300 tracks, many premium, from the likes of Katy Perry, Justin Beiber, Maroon 5, Lady Gaga and Lil’ Wayne. There are a few older hits from former greats like Blondie and The Jackson Five and free tracks from lesser-known bands. Paid playable tracks can be purchased in bundles of two to 12 songs, for credits earned playing or by in-app purchases. Credits can also be had by completing offers. There are picks and notes for sale too, the former allows players to choose daily acts in Tour mode and the latter are for wall decorations.

The decorations are a neat new twist and borrow from tried and true formulas for monetizing freemium games. The paid perks are great and Disney Mobile makes no bones about hoping players will pony up for their favortie tracks and decos, but with just the free content there's a lot of gaming here.

There is a Jam mode, which is a relaxed pick-your-own song and level setting game, and a great place to practice. Practice is needed if players are going to take on Hard or Extreme challenges, and all these variants plus the song selections make for an amazing amount of replay value.

The graphics have had an impressive upgrade too, with videos and light shows in the background and notes so bright they almost hurt the eyes as they flash by in neon nanoseconds.

Tap Tap Revenge Tour isn’t new, but it’s smart, gorgeous, and satisfying as a free game, while being enough fun to warrant spending some real money for favorite tracks. Grab it and start shredding.
