Apple’s democratisation of the smartphone in 1,000 words

20120707-205059.jpg

A picture paints a thousand words, right? Here’s another guy on another evening late at night at London’s Waterloo Railway Station holding a Burger King sign.

In his hand is a white iPhone 4 (or 4S).

This is a super achievement by Apple. It also heralds a significant challenge for them: The transition from niche to dominant.

How are they doing? Very very good at the moment.

When will the wheels come off the domination? A single misstep could be fatal, especially since Apple’s customer base has expanded well beyond their original super-loyal and understanding fan base. How well would another ‘antennagate’ experience play with the tens and tens of millions of new and fickle customers in the Apple marketplace?

The good news is that even the chap who is paid to stand at Waterloo Station can afford an iPhone experience. This is super. That’s one more person elevated out of feature phone purgatory, now capable of accessing and doing so much more.

Interesting that he has selected Apple as opposed to say Android or Nokia.

Have you seen any similar examples of the iPhone popping up in unexpected places?

  1. Now, that’s not fair. Given context (UK?), easily in the last 5yrs this person would have had a Nokia N95 or similar and doing the same. If the sign were to say something about an app, that would be something to note of a change – especially if he had a Nokia in hand 😉

  2. Do you reckon? Do you think five years ago the ‘sign guy’ would have been sporting an absolute top-of-the-range smartphone?
