StarRacing is a kart racing platform game that tries to set itself apart from games like Sonic All Star and Mario Kart with its unique power-ups, well-designed tracks and level-based game play. It exceeded all my expectations, but it’s not without flaws either. Before exploring the downsides, let’s drive right into the features.

StarRacing, previously known as Card Racer, starts players off in Career mode where they must complete levels on a planet that become increasingly more difficult as the game progresses. Instead of collecting power-ups on the track, gamers can equip their vehicle with cards. The ability to select 3 skills cards before each race allows players to use a bit of strategy to compete against the AI players. Along with skill cards, players can also equip their vehicle with a passive, vehicle and avatar card.

Each of the cards has a certain number of times it can be used before it is no longer valid. Players must then refill or upgrade the card with coins that are earned after each race. Players can also get more coins via diamonds that are earned or bought as IAPs. Diamonds are used on the racer slot machine which lets players gamble in an effort to earn more coins.

The race tracks look great and the coolest feature is that not all tracks require gamers to race against other players. For instance, there are tracks where players must destroy targets or collect as many coins as possible. This varies the game play and keeps it fresh.

It’s clear that StarRacing has a lot going for it. From the graphics and track design to the unique power-ups, the game has a lot of potential. However, there are a few kinks in the game that need polished to make this a five star experience. One issue is that there are IAPs that distract from making it an enjoyable experience. But the biggest area of concern are the controls and driving mechanics. The sensitivity can be adjusted in the options menu, but it’s still difficult to make some turns in the game without flying off the screen—which I did on more than one occasion. The game also seemed to lag at times, ultimately resulting in frustration.

Since StarRacing was just released, issues with the gameplay are expected. Future updates are already in the works to improve the game play such as online multiplayer support. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly kart racer, this is one to add to the library once an update addresses many of the issues players are experiencing. This kart racer has a lot of potential to climb high on the charts so keep an eye on it.

Video Note - the video embedded below has the old name on it, Card Racing. We'll update as soon as the developers create a new one.
