Cloth, a Fashion App, Is Now Weather Sensitive

Freezing outside? An iPhone app will show the navy blue peacoat and dark gray chino pants you wore last winter. Cloth, an app that helps picky fashionistas organize their outfits, released a software update Wednesday that adds weather data.

The makers of Cloth have teamed up with Wunderground, a weather Web site, to show outfits based on the temperature outside. To use it, you snap a photo of yourself after you’ve pieced together a good outfit, and then the app will automatically tag the pic with the current temperature. When picking out an outfit, you can select the weather tab, and it will display the best outfits to wear under that day’s weather conditions.

When discussing Cloth, it’s impossible not to bring up the 1990s movie Clueless, in which Cher, played by Alicia Silverstone, used a computer program that helped her match outfits. Seth Porges, a former Maxim editor, says the app was actually inspired by his girlfriend, Wray Serna. He said that occasionally she would take a picture of herself whenever she put on a good outfit so that she could remember it, but these images wouldn’t be easy to organize inside a photo album. “A light bulb went off and I realized that there’s got to be a better way to find and organize outfits,” Mr. Porges said.

Mr. Porges noted that his app did not require registration or login of any sort, to respect people’s privacy. “I think when people are taking pictures of themselves in their bedrooms, having that kind of peace of mind is good for people,” he said. “A lot of other apps that do the same thing were basically designed to suck up and steal as much personal information as possible.”

The Cloth app previously cost $1, but with the new update it is now free to download, sort of. Unlocking the weather feature will cost a dollar inside the app.
