Pushing into the fast-growing market for servers built using low-cost, low-power processors, Hewlett-Packard unveiled a new line of low-energy servers, dubbed ‘Gemini,’ in San Francisco, Calif., Tuesday.

The servers will be built around a variant of Intel’s low-cost Atom processors code-named ‘Centerton,’ according to HP.

Intel’s Atom processors are best knwon for their role in cheap ‘netbook,’ computers -- but Intel is pushing Atom variants into everything from smartphones to tablet computers.

The move comes after Intel rival Advanced Micro Devices agreed in March to acquire a high-profile startup, SeaMicro, that was using Intel’s processors in its servers.

Servers based on smartphone processors, however, may be a bigger long-term threat. Last month, Dell said it has begun shipping servers based on the the ARM-based processors typically found in tablets and smartphones.

HP’s Gemini servers will begin shipping by the end of the year.
