Apple iPad Smart Case

The Smart Case for the new iPad and the iPad 2 retains the thin design and dual-function stand of the original Apple Smart Cover, but now adds full-body protection.

June 18, 2012

The Smart Case ($49 direct) for the New iPad and iPad 2 builds on the success of Apple's original Smart Cover ($39, 4 stars). Simply put, it's the Smart Cover attached to a thin case for the aluminum back of the iPad. It's less streamlined than the original, but adds protection for the whole tablet, instead of just its screen. Apple released this new accessory quietly, and rightfully so, as it's nothing new—this form factor exists in countless iterations from third-party vendors. Even though it's late to Apple's own iPad party, the magnetized Smart Case smartly balances form and function, and is one of the better options for protecting your iPad without sacrificing its slim silhouette.

The Smart Case is made from the same grippy, rubberized polyurethane material and soft, felt-like microfiber lining found in the original. And it comes in six colors (light gray, dark gray, blue, green, pink, and red), but unlike the original, there's no leather option. The back is soft and flexible, with a rigid outer edge that wraps around the iPad. And, unlike with similar third-party cases, the Smart Case sports an actual Apple logo to replace the one on the back of the iPad that you're covering up.

You get cutouts for the camera lens, charging port, orientation lock switch, microphone, and speaker grille. The Power and Volume buttons are covered by raised bumps, which I found to be easy to press and did not detract from the tactile feel of the buttons themselves. The screen cover is permanently attached and retains the scored four-panel folding design of the original Smart Cover, with a magnetized edge that keeps the case closed when your iPad isn't in use and wakes it up from sleep when opened. The Smart Case is far more secure than the Smart Cover, and it will stay in place even if jostled in a bag. The fold-up stand function works in the same way as the original, providing a propped up angle for either comfortable typing or hands-free movie watching. The case fits equally well on both the New iPad and iPad 2, and while it was easy to slip on, removing the case takes a bit more force.

There are two minor problems I found with the new Smart Case. First, the stand function, while more or less identical to the original, feels a bit less precise and secure in the upright position. The back prevents the tablet from sitting completely flush with the stand, which made it feel like a light tap could topple the tablet. Second, the gap between the case edge and front cover is pretty small and makes it a bit more difficult to open. These are pretty minor gripes though, and the Smart Case is still a great option for protecting your new iPad while adding a simple and effective stand. If you like the Smart Cover, but want a little more protection for your iPad without adding bulk, it's hard to go wrong with the Apple Smart Case.
