Another annoyance in the Grand Robert application that I have been discussing on this blog lately is that, each time you launch it, the application displays a modal splash screen on top of the application’s main window, which has to be manually dismissed with a mouse click before you can start using the application. (The Robert & Collins application also has a splash screen, but it’s not modal and it disappears by itself after a while.)

The other day, a Betalogue reader pointed out to me that there is a hidden solution for this, which involves editing not the application’s package contents, but the application‘s preference file. (Here’s his original forum post, in French.) For the older version of the Grand Robert application, the preference file was called “com.lerobert.Le Grand Robert 2009.plist”. For the newest Grand Robert application just released, the preference file is now called “com.sejer.lerobertlegrandrobertmac.plist”, but the principle is the same. Just edit the file in Property List Editor or in a text editor and change the value of the “Hide Startup Screen” key from “false” to “true”.

Now, the next time you launch the application, you will not get the splash screen and you will get to the application’s main window directly.
