With the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, we were always going to be looking for new document functionality in OX Mountain Lion. Also this week, Cabinet NG expanded its file sharing capacity, SpringCM's Android app is generally available and Google buys QuickOffice.
OX Mountain Lion’s Document Functionality
With Apple's World Wide Developer Conference well underway, one of the things many business users were waiting for was further details on OS X, dubbed Mountain Lion, which is due to be launched next month and which will be available from the Mac App Store for $19.99.
Needless to say, there is a whole bunch of new functions on this, apart from those directly related to the management of documents, which in and of themselves are pretty cool.
There is, for example, the implementation of Voice Dictation, which is already available on iPhone 4S and iPad. This enables users to dictate notes, articles and messages to their computer using voice and will work with any app or program, including third-party programs such as Microsoft Word.
However, the iCloud functionality around documents is more likely to be of interest to business users as it comes with deeper integration with iCloud services, which stores user information and documents in Apple’s cloud system.
iCloud support will be built in at the system level while apps such as Pages, Numbers and Keynote will auto-sync documents through iCloud. Messages, currently in a public beta, also relies on iCloud, as does Reminders syncing.
Users who move from an iOS device to Mac OS X will find Contacts, Mail, Calendar, Messages, FaceTime, and Find My Mac set up on the computer.
There is also a new version of Safari that has integrated search and URL fields. It also sports a new interface that enables users to move between pages using multi-touch gestures with a mode called Tab View.
Hopefully we’ll be hearing more about this over the week, so keep an eye out.
Google Buys QuickOffice
Also this week, Google announced that it is buying QuickOffice. There isn’t a lot more than was posted on the Google blog at the end of last week, which was little enough.
Typically, the price was not announced, nor were the reasons for the buy, which has led to all kinds of speculation about it from all kinds of people.
The announcement simply said:
We’re happy to announce that we have acquired QuickOffice, a leader in office productivity solutions. Today, consumers, businesses and schools use Google Apps to get stuff done from anywhere, with anyone and on any device.
Quickoffice has an established track record of enabling seamless interoperability with popular file formats, and we'll be working on bringing their powerful technology to our Apps product suite.”
More than 400 million devices are currently equipped with the QuickOffice app, which costs US$ 15 to US$ 20. It works on several types of devices, including Apple Inc.’s iPhone and iPad and those running Google’s Android software.
QuickOffice is considered one of the best options to work on Microsoft-based documents on the mobile -- including Android, iPhone, iPad and a few others. Of course it also supports a number of other file formats, but the key here is likely the Microsoft Office compatibility.

SpringCM’s Android App
Also this week, SpringCM announced that SpringCM Mobile for Android devices is available for download on Google Play and Amazon AppStore for Android.
SpringCM Mobile for Android enables business users to securely share content and work together from virtually any mobile device.
Business teams using devices such as Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy Tab, HTC One, HTC Evo and Motorola Droid Razr now have relevant content whereever and whenever they need it.

Cabinet NG Expands Sharing Functionality
From Cabinet NG, this week is the news that it is expanding the sharing functionality with its CNG-SHARE, allowing non-CNG users to securely share documents and collaborate. SHARE is a component of CNG-SAFE 8.0, which the company described as the industry’s “first fully integrated document management, cloud-based file sharing and workflow solution.”
CNG-SHARE allows SAFE users and non-SAFE contacts, such as customers or vendors, to share documents by posting them to a registered user’s password-enabled SHARE account. Documents can be accessed and managed via a browser.
Within SAFE 8.0, SHARE provides one viewing and control screen for shared documents and for related functions, such as accessing, deleting and uploading.
KnowledgeLake, Kiefer Consulting Partner
Finally, KnowledgeLake and Kiefer Consulting have announced a partnership to bring better document management to SharePoint.
KnowledgeLake we know as a SharePoint enterprise CMS company that provides paper and electronic capture, search, viewing and workflow solutions to SharePoint users.
Kiefer Consulting provides solutions using SharePoint, Dynamics CRM and mobile technologies.
The joint solution will enable Kiefer customers to extend their SharePoint deployments to include document imaging, records management and web content management capabilities.
For KnowledgeLake, Kiefer’s strong regional presence in Northern California and its SharePoint service expertise opens new opportunities for solution delivery.
