A nice idea and easy to use but far too limited.

Adobe has been ramping up its iOS support in recent times. One such example is new app, Adobe Collage, offering the ability to form "creative moodboards". It's a concept that should be ideal for creative types and those in need of some visual inspiration but may be rather off-putting for those on a budget.

Immediately, Adobe Collage is very simple to use. Sample projects are available to guide the way but it's all pretty straight forward to figure out. A plus sign leads to creating a new project then it's a matter of adding images, videos or text to the creation. Rotating such images is a matter of pinching and manipulating with fingers, immediately intuitive and simple to master. Plenty of options are available for importing imagery with iOS camera roll, Google, Flickr, WebClip, YouTube all at the user's disposal. There's also the ability to use Adobe's Creative Cloud functionality, a new place for cloud storage that works well in conjunction with other Adobe apps. Google is a particularly useful tool to have available as it means users can input a Google image search, then import images directly and quickly.

While options for importing are pretty varied, editing them is a little limited. Sure, you can resize and reposition them but brush tools are very basic. Text entry is also limited and somewhat awkward with some unnecessary multiple taps required to get things working. In a work environment, it might be handy to devise ideas but it won't be long until the user wants to implement something that's not possible.

Priced at under $3, none of this would feel so bad. Adobe Collage does offer some very convenient features and it's very easy to use. Another problem looms though, it's priced at $9.99, the kind of price one would expect an essential tool for. It's just not quite there. Layering is nearly non-existent, other than bringing segments to the front or pushing to the back. The limited brush tools are easily eclipsed by a multitude of other creative apps. Ultimately, it's the Adobe name that makes us take note of Collage but it's not quite enough to make up for that hefty price tag.
