Apple doesn't own iPad.com and hasn't even disputed ownership of the domain, as pointed out by tech journalist Robin Wauters via a tweet.

A Whois lookup (think of it as a phonebook for websites) reveals that iPad.com is registered to Network Solutions, a domain name and web hosting company.
When you purchase a domain name you can fill out your personal contact information for the Whois lookup, but plenty of companies dealing in domains are happy to allow you to use their contact information if you want to stay anonymous.
Draw your own conclusions, but that appears to be the most likely scenario here.
