It feels a little empty, but Big Win Blackjack is still a worthwhile game of twenty-one.

Card games and iPhones go together like two things that go really well together. The touch controls go well with all the card flipping and dragging, and the pacing of just about everything involving numbers and suits lends itself to portable entertainment. Big Win Blackjack is no exception. But while it’s certainly a competent example of freemium blackjack, it feels a little vanilla.

Big Win Blackjack invites players to dive right in. Pick a casino with specific rules such as maximum bids and go. That’s pretty much it. From there it’s blackjack. Try to hit 21, beat the dealer to win some cash. Depending on the casino, it’s even possible to several hands at once. Special earnings (i.e. the freemium cash) can also be spent to unlock more venues and new decks of card to play with.

Folks who enjoy Blackjack will most likely enjoy dabbling in Big Win Blackjack as well. I’ll admit I can’t speak much to the intricacies as I’m not a bit gambler, but it certainly seems to feature all the stuff one would expect. All of the small differences between the casinos keep things from getting stale, too.

As much as I hate to say it even with all Big Win Blackjack does right it just doesn’t “pop.” Perhaps I’ve been spoiled by all the glitz and glam of more colorful iOS titles, but it just seems kinda bland. Even without a flashy presentation it doesn’t offer much outside of the core game. For one thing, the handful of new decks that can be bought are little more than color variations for the most part. It doesn’t help that the price for all of the special stuff is more than a little high.

Still, Big Win Blackjack does blackjack and it does it well. It’s just that that’s about all it does. But if that’s what an iOS user is looking for, then there’s no reason for them to avoid it. Especially since it’s a free download.
