Rogers Communications Inc., Canada’s largest wireless carrier, beat profit estimates in 10 of the past 12 quarters as smartphone customers racked up hefty bills surfing the Web on their iPhones. New customers are a thriftier bunch.

Sixty percent of its wireless customers on contract now use smartphones, Rogers Chief Executive Officer Nadir Mohamed said yesterday. New users are looking for no-frills data packages as competition in the sector heats up.
