The StickWars series has come a long way since the first game back in 2009. Not only is StickWars 3 shinier and more attractive to look at, but the game mechanics are slightly more complex, while retaining that pick up and play mentality that has been a common trend in the series.

The plot is one that few players will pay attention to. Players take the role of Dark Lord King Maelnik as he defends his castle from the scourge of evil. Different evil, however, given that Maelnik as his own army of undead monsters and is far from the good guy.

What this means for the player is plenty of finger flicking action. A more tactile way of fighting, it means that action is more compelling than other strategy means such as tower defense. It's frantic at times too but always fun. For the most part, players throw the enemies up in the air with a flick of their finger, watching them fall from the sky and splat across the screen.

There is a little more to it, of course. Money is gained from success, which can then be used to buy upgrades for the castle as well as new defenses. These defenses range from zombie archers with special attacks to necromancers with a wealth of spells. As the enemy also builds in strength, it's useful to be able to upgrade steadily.

StickWars 3 is a free to play game but backed up with a number of in-app purchases. These purchases speed up the unlocking of defensive upgrades. They're not vital but there is that sense of missing out on some useful powers if not purchased early on.

Ultimately, StickWars 3 is an easy to play time waster. The minutes flow quickly while playing it but once put down again, it'll be forgotten nearly as fast. For the asking price, that's all that anyone could want.
