DevilDark: The Fallen Kingdom is an action-RPG that makes the mistake of being too monotonous.

DevilDark: The Fallen Kingdom makes a crucial mistake. It never tries to hide what it really is. It is ultimately a repetitive hack 'n slash with grinding and fetch quests. It also has two tiers of currency, one of which appears to be primarily obtained through in-app purchases. It makes all this rather apparent within the first hour of playing it. It doesn't gussy it up with some kind of overarching story or anything other than presenting missions with quests to fetch x of item y, and that's ultimately what it is. The same as many other hack 'n slash games on the App Store.

The problem is that without that extra material, this is really kinda boring.

Sure, there appears to be some basic frame story about an amnesiac hero, but what RPG hasn't had a story about an amnesiac hero? Then, players are led through an insufferable unskippable tutorial that painstakingly explains very basic information in a time-consuming way. Then, the missions start. "Kill 10 boars!" "Collect 9 pieces of wood!" "Kill 30 slimes!" There are missions that progress through the game, and ones that are just shorter sidequests, but all have the same goal: fetch x of y.

The controls are decent, using a virtual joystick and buttons. The graphics are cel-shaded, which gives the game an interesting look, though the models aren't all that detailed. The sound got extremely repetitive; play this game on mute or supply other tracks.

The combat just isn't all that exciting, as it's just "attack, use special attack, heal when necessary" but then the game has the audacity to go and lower ranking because of using health potions. The weapons have some slight differences to them, but nothing really noteworthy.

There just isn't a lot very compelling here. I found it hard to keep on going with this game, because nothing was really drawing me back. Maybe if the story was a bigger factor, especially early on. Perhaps if quests were more than just fetch quests, then it would be more compelling. I never really felt like the game was bad, it was just far too straightforward and monotonous for me to truly enjoy.
