I have to admit - my interest in the for gaming as I grow older is becoming less and less.

Maybe it’s just a stagnancy thing. I know I can’t deal with another generation of first person shooters full of stupid kids playing online who call me any number of racial slurs because I’m not as good at the game as them. And really, I don’t know that another round of Wii/Playstation/XBox is what the gaming world needs.

That said, the world of mobile gaming really has grabbed me hard. Low prices plus a more open environment has allowed for more unique ideas to be developed. It might have been by accident, but I feel like that Apple stumbled right across the perfect way for indie studios to be seen on an even keel with the major developers.  Even better than Microsoft XBox Live Arcade has.

So…what would you say to the idea that Apple is working on a game console?

That’s the big rumor coming from the folks at Cult of Mac today.

Over the weekend, Apple head Tim Cook was rumored to have been at the Valve offices. Valve, of course, is the developer behind the huge Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress and Portal games, not to mention the massive Steam network for game distribution and sales.  Valve’s even been rumored to be working on a game console of their own.

That said - the rumor is that Tim Cook was there to talk about Apple’s console plans.

For years, Apple has been rumored to be working on a smart television, taking everything they’ve learned with the iPhone, iPad and AppleTV, and combining it in a proper television, instead of a set-top box.

Now, the rumor goes, the TV is one component of a whole system, which includes a touch and movement based system, similar to Microsoft’s Kinect.

Was Apple going to extend an olive branch to Valve for development? To compare notes on consoles? Or is everyone wrong, and this meeting was about something else entirely?

It sounds fake enough to be unreal (really, a TV AND Console? How much is that going to cost?), but stranger things have happened.

Take it with a grain of salt. But if this is real - this could be a game changer. Period.
